A tooth cavity is a hole in the tooth that emerges from tooth decay. Dental hygiene can help prevent cavities. However, the reality is that anyone can get a cavity. Acids in foods and drinks can erode the enamel (the tooth’s hard outer layer), creating a tooth cavity.

You will likely notice your cavities during your regular exam and cleaning with your dentist. Once you come to our dentist’s office in Salt Lake City to get your cavity filled, our dentist will start by applying a local anesthetic, then using an abrasive tool to remove the portion of the tooth that has decayed and fill it with a wide variety of materials, such as:

• Amalgam Fillings: Amalgam fillings are strong and are ideal for filling cavities in the back of the mouth.
• Composite Fillings: A combination of glass or quartz filler that can be made to match the color of your tooth. 
• Metals: Gold or silver are the most common metals used for cavity fillings.
• Ceramic: A ceramic cavity filling is tooth-colored, and it is less likely to stain over time than a composite cavity filling.
• Glass Ionomer: A blend of acrylic and glass used to create a cavity filling that releases fluoride to help protect teeth.
